Porcelain countertops have begun gaining popularity only in recent times, especially among Americans. A few years ago, having a large format porcelain slab used for a kitchen countertop was something not conceivable. As a matter of fact, although large format porcelain stoneware has been in the market for a considerable amount of years, until very recently we could only find it with a 6 mm thickness, definitely not enough for a kitchen countertop.

Now, with the advent of the new advanced technologies, 12 mm and 20 mm thick large format porcelain slabs have begun to spread quite rapidly.

Let’s see now why porcelain slabs are a smart and safe choice for kitchen worktops.

HEAT RESISTANCE

A feature to consider carefully is the heat resistance of the worktop. Distractedly placing the boiling pot or coffee pot on the worktop could compromise your kitchen top forever. Porcelain stoneware material is baked in temperatures ranging from about 2200-2650 Fahrenheit which make it resist to extremely high temperatures. You can easily forget about any thermal shock when using a porcelain countertop.

SCRATCH RESISTANCE

Porcelain stoneware is the most scratch resistant material there is right now. This is even more true in its honed version, which can be scratched only by a diamond.

STAIN RESISTANCE, ACID RESISTANCE AND POROSITY

The normal activity that occurs while cooking puts a strain on some of the materials used as kitchen tops. The porosity of the materials is the reason why the staining substances are able to penetrate and this porosity varies according to the type of material: marble and granite have a high percentage of porosity while the porosity of porcelain stoneware is basically non-existent.  This brings up yet another advantage a porcelain countertop has over the other materials: is easy to maintain and easy to clean.

If I drop some lemon juice or vinegar on the kitchen counter, will it spoil?  Do I need to clean it right away?  With which products?

If you use a porcelain countertop you can easily forget about all these problems. Porcelain slabs are non-porous and do not absorb liquids and household acids such as lemon, wine, vinegar etc. You can prepare your salad directly on your countertop.

In conclusion, using porcelain slabs for your countertop is a great deal if you want a material that is:

  • Affordable;
  • Easy to clean and maintain;
  • Resistant to stains, chemicals, heat, UV light, scratches;
  • A non-porous material.

The choice is up to you!
